January – Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) designates January as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. This is a key opportunity to spread the word about the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of this serious disease. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable cancers, yet it still has a significant impact on women around the world.

In 2020, approximately 604,000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer and 342,000 women died from the disease; the majority of these cases and deaths (almost 90% in both cases) occurred in low- and middle-income countries. It is therefore urgent to raise awareness and take action.

Causes and prevention

The main cause of cervical cancer is persistent infection with high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV), a very common group of sexually transmitted viruses.

There are vaccines that protect against these high-risk types of HPV and screening programmes that can detect signs of the disease at an early stage, allowing for effective treatment and early detection.

WHO campaign against cervical cancer

The World Health Organization has launched the Global Initiative to Eliminate Cervical Cancer, which aims to reduce the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer by improving access to vaccination, screening and treatment.

This initiative is a key step towards achieving the goal of eliminating cervical cancer as a public health problem.

By 2030, countries have just six years to meet the World Health Organization (WHO) targets to help eliminate cervical cancer within this ambitious timeframe. Recent research by scientists from IARC and partner institutions suggests that these goals will not be met unless countries increase screening programmes, improve HPV vaccination coverage and expand access to affordable treatment.

How to participate

During Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, it is important to disseminate validated information, promote HPV vaccination and stress the importance of regular screening. Everyone can contribute to raising awareness and supporting women in the fight against the disease.
